Jen-Ken AF 2829 Mega Coil Ceramic Kiln
As part of the Mega Coil Series, this kiln is built for busy studios and serious artists who demand reliable, repeatable firings with minimal downtime. The design uses a traditional 3" brick structure enhanced with a single heavy-gauge Mega Coil per full brick, delivering greater heat capacity and longer coil life. When the kiln size grows, more of these oversized, super heavy gauge Mega Coils can be accommodated to raise heat output and durability.
Construction and Coil Design
- 29" depth with six oversized Mega Coils
- Coils extend outside the kiln to color-coded wiring that routes to a power block and then to the power cord
- Internal wiring uses 8 color-coded element tails; connections uncouple for stress-free coil changes
- Longer coil life: Mega Coils are engineered to extend firing life by 10–15 years compared with similarly sized kilns
Control and Firing Capabilities
The stand-alone controller is housed in a wall-mount enclosure designed to stay near the kiln while staying out of the heat. It offers full cone firing settings with slow, medium, and fast options, plus 9 user programs for customized firing schedules, and it uses a 60-amp mercury relay for longevity. The kiln plugs directly into the Orton AutoFire Digital 12-button controller for precise control. An 8-gauge thermocouple is inserted into the kiln to register temperature throughout firing.
Ease of Maintenance and Coil Replacement
Jen-Ken designed these kilns so a coil swap can be completed in about 10 minutes by the user, minimizing downtime. With six Mega Coils and color-coded exterior wiring leading to a power block, coil changes are straightforward, and the 8 color-coded element tails allow quick disconnects for stress-free maintenance.
Performance and Automation
Temperature is accurately displayed throughout firing, and heat-work adjustments plus final firing temperatures are automatically calculated by the controller based on actual kiln performance to ensure consistent results as the kiln ages. The system can even estimate the cost of each firing, helping studios manage production more efficiently.
